Bog turtles are not turtles that should be kept as pets though. Unlike many other pets , feeding the turtles in the correct ratio will never be a problem. They eat pretty easily, and their appetite includes a wide range of foods. Musk turtles are feisty and may try to bite you when handled. The common musk turtle, also known as the stinkpot, will emit a foul smell when feeling scared or threatened. If you plan on housing several turtles make sure the aquarium is large enough.

They’re pretty easy-going, which is great for beginners. As long as you meet their baseline health and habitat requirements, peninsula cooters can live long and happy lives in captivity. Box turtles are usually very easy to feed, as they’ll accept a wide variety of plant- and animal-based foods. They are a shy species, who’ll typically respond to their keeper by withdrawing into their shell and “closing” it via a hinge on their plastrons. Red-footed tortoises are another one of the most popular tortoise species on the reptile market. Given their endearing personalities and attractive color patterns, it is easy to see why this is the case.
Freshwater turtles ideal for ponds
Over a double boiler or in the microwave, melt chocolate until smooth. Coat each caramel mound in chocolate, gently lifting the mound out of the chocolate with a fork allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Return chocolate covered mound to its place on baking sheet. If using, sprinkle surface with flake salt while chocolate is still warm. Repeat with remaining mounds, chocolate, and flake salt.
They also need warm basking platforms and ornaments that provide them with the opportunity to get out to rest. Eastern box turtles need a lot of space, but they're adaptable and, with the right housing, they can live in or outdoors. Red-eared sliders are one of the most popular of all aquatic turtle species. They tend to be friendlier and more sociable than some of their relatives, they're pretty active, and they're widely available. Outdoor pond turtles can eat a variety of things including commercial pellets, insects such as crickets, mosquitos, nats, fish , leafy greens, and plenty more. See our in depth article about what turtles eat to learn about all the possibilities.

The ramp has a non-slip strip to aid the terrapin climbing. Terrapin Tanks are strong, durable, safe, and environmentally friendly ABS material. This tank is perfect for use in a home or commercial terrarium. Turtle tanks are ideal for use by turtles, tortoises, and other land animals. They're made of durable plastic materials that can withstand all the weight of the animals using them.

As far as night temperatures don’t fall below 60 F, the tortoise will be fine outside. The Greek tortoise grows to a modest size of just 5 to 8 inches. As herbivores, they generally feed on weeds, and edible grass. You can supplement their diet with commercial tortoise food if you want them to gain weight. This active, terrestrial turtle is another species in the family of box turtles.
Aquatic Turtles
If you have smaller turtles like a musk turtle, mud turtle, or painted turtle then they will be ok. The European pond terrapin is known to live in the wetlands. This makes them an excellent pet turtle for your outdoor pond. The carapace of this chelonian is olive-brown with yellow stripes.
You should also consider the temperature and humidity levels in their tank; different species of turtles prefer different levels. Similarly, certain turtle species are not very good for low humidity areas, so you should avoid those species if your area has a humidity problem. Your turtle should not be delicate and can be kept in an outside pond or indoor tank without affecting its health.
Why Getting Small Turtles from the Wild Isn’t a Good Idea
They stick close to the water, but they are land-rovers through and through. In the wild, you can spot these creatures swimming in the water or basking on a floating log to dry off. In captivity, you must cater to that behavior and create a similar environment.
Mud turtles are very similar in appearance to musk turtles but unlike musk turtles, mud turtles have flatter carapaces. As with other aquatic turtles, musk turtles tend to be mostly carnivorous, although they accept plant food such as duckweed. The largest of the painted turtles, which is the western painted turtle, rarely grows beyond 8 inches. These widespread turtles are easily recognized by the vivid coloration on their body. The most popular one among them is the western painted turtle. Like musk turtles, they aren't particularly strong swimmers, so their water should not be too deep.
In addition to this, they also eat aquatic plants and even leafy greens such as romaine lettuce and kale. These turtles do best when housed outside, but a large 50-gallon tank will suffice for one adult turtle. They generally do best with a basking site, enough substrate to burrow in, and high humidity. When outside, they love to swim and bask by a water source, so it may be ideal to set up a large outdoor pen with a kiddy pool with shallow water to swim in. Otherwise, when kept inside, you'll want to mist the turtle and soak it several times a week.
The enclosure should be quite warm with a temperature range of 60 degrees to 86 degrees. The basking area should have a temperature of about 90 degrees. Elongata feed on high protein diets such as earthworms, leafy greens, and fruits. The leafy greens can be provided more often with about ten percent fruit. Make sure to supplement the diet with calcium and vitamin D3. This turtle is relatively easy to care for although it can pose a number of challenges.
